Our Story

A Family Table,
Carried From Home to Fatih

Shalal opened as a gathering place first, a restaurant second. Our family recipes travelled with us from Asmara, Khartoum and Addis Ababa, and every dish on this menu is cooked the way it was cooked for us — slowly, with real berbere, real butter, and no shortcuts.

In the heart of Fatih, Shalal has become a home for İstanbul's East African community and for curious neighbours alike. We serve everything halal, we bake our own injera daily, and we still brew coffee the old way — roasted, ground and poured from the jebena, right at your table.

"Every guest leaves with buna in their cup and family at their table." — The Shalal Welcome

Why Guests Choose Shalal

Authentic Cuisine,
Warm East African Hospitality

Not a fusion menu chasing trends — real Eritrean, Sudanese and Ethiopian cooking, halal throughout, served the way it's meant to be shared.

Fresh, Honest Ingredients

Spices ground in-house, injera baked daily, and meat sourced fresh for every service — nothing frozen, nothing rushed.

100% Halal Kitchen

Every dish, every sauce, every cut of meat — fully halal, prepared with care for families and observant guests alike.

Family & Community Atmosphere

Long tables built for sharing, children welcome, and a room that feels like someone's grandmother's kitchen — because it does.

Traditional Recipes

Kitfo, doro wat, tibs and ful medames, made from recipes passed down rather than reinvented for a menu.

The Coffee Ceremony

Beans roasted, ground and brewed in a clay jebena at your table — the full buna ritual, not a shortcut espresso.

Heart of Fatih

Easy to find, comfortable seating, and quick, attentive service — a proper neighbourhood table in central İstanbul.

The Coffee Ceremony

Buna Is Never Rushed
— It's Shared

In Eritrea and Ethiopia, coffee is a ritual, not a quick cup. At Shalal, we bring the full ceremony to your table — three rounds, start to finish.

01
Roasting — Awel
Green beans are roasted tableside in a flat pan until dark and fragrant, the aroma carried around the table by hand.
02
Brewing — Kale'i
Hand-ground beans are brewed slowly in the clay jebena and poured from height into small cups without handles.
03
The Third Round — Bereka
Tradition holds the third pour carries a blessing — lighter, and meant to be lingered over with good company.
04
Served With
Popcorn, roasted barley, or himbasha bread on the side, and frankincense on the coals throughout.
